Growing Through a Job Loss

11/8/2021

Losing your job for any reason, be it organizational downsizing, employees being laid off, or some forced early retirements, getting unemployed is surely a shocking and challenging time. However, staying stuck in the phase of sadness, denial, and anger is not healthy and leads to several mental health challenges. So, it is extremely important to move past this phase and head towards a hopeful and rewarding life.
Because of joblessness, you may feel misled by your career, helpless to alter your life's course, or guilty of some perceived inadequacy or misstep. Anxiety and tension can have incapacitating effects. However, despite how bad things look right now, there is still some glimmer of hope. You can accept these setbacks, reduce your stress and worry, and go back to work with patience and the correct coping techniques. So, how can you combat the stress after a job loss? Let me share some promising ways:

Grieve the Loss Actively
Being grieved is a natural outcome of any setback or shock. So, when things go south and you lose your job, endorse your feelings and let yourself grieve actively. Cry, if you want to or whine or vent out in front of your trusted fellows, and get the much needed catharsis. This will further bring out clarity for you and appease your raving mind. So, face your feelings and allow yourself to lament the loss to replenish yourself.

Develop a Growth Mindset
One of the most terrific ways to cope with the post-job-loss phase is by developing a growth mindset. Never, ever give up on hope since doing so devalues you, something no one does when they truly love themselves. So, cultivate a positive mentality, an optimistic mindset that allows you to pursue your dreams, shows you light at the end of the tunnel and you will see how happiness pours into your life as a result of this single act of self-love.

Seek Family and Friends’ Support
The inability to find work has an impact on the entire family, so don't try to solve all of your difficulties on your own. Secretly losing your work would simply serve to exacerbate the already difficult circumstances. The support of your family, even amid a terrible scenario, can help you survive and even thrive in this difficult situation. If you require assistance with stress management or with grieving the loss of a job, now is the time to turn to individuals who care about you for support, even if you consider yourself to be tough and self-sufficient in your approach to life. Keep them up to date on your job search and let them know if there is anything they can do to help you. There is no question that they will listen to you and offer you sympathetic counsel that will assist you in coping with the stress and despair that you are currently experiencing.

Indulge in Self-Care
The stress associated with losing your job and being unemployed can have a detrimental effect on your well-being and may increase your vulnerability to mental health disorders. So, self-care is extremely crucial in such a challenging phase.
Therefore, you must try to maintain a healthy lifestyle and do not let your job hunt take all of your time. Allow yourself some time for leisure, rest, and relaxation, or whatever it is that can re-energize you. Your job search will be more fruitful if you are in optimal mental, emotional, and physical health. Additionally, maintain a normal sleep pattern and employ relaxing techniques such as deep belly breathing or aromatherapy to preserve your composure and calm.

Seek Professional Support
If you feel drowned under the stress of being unemployed and cannot process any of the self-driven techniques, do not hesitate to reach out to a professional who can help you come out of your depression. A psychotherapist can make use of talk therapy and other techniques to let you vent out the pent-up feelings and prepare you to fight the gray days.

Do Something that Nurtures Your Soul
More importantly, in the trying phase of unemployment, do not waste your time and energy in self-pity or becoming pessimistic. Instead, try to introspect and explore yourself to find out what nurtures your soul. The involvement in some meaningful activity will give you a sense of fulfillment and keep the unnecessary stress at bay.

In short, although losing a job can be distressing, there are many things you can do to keep your spirits up and find a new job or a new purpose in life. Keep moving forward knowing that this too shall pass and better days will approach.
