How To Support Aging Family With Dementia

10/8/2019

Do you feel overwhelmed taking care of your elderly family member combating dementia?  If yes, you are not alone in this strife. Offering care to an ailing person is quite a huge responsibility and thus requires someone with great nerves to take this up. However, as humans, we do tend to feel exhausted, unhappy and depressed when we see that despite offering incessant care, the ailing person barely heals as dementia has no cure but only life-long care. Dementia is not uncommon as currently, around 30 million people from around the globe are facing this issue. It needs great care from the caregiver and because of its demanding nature; the caretakers are also referred to as second patients because it is risky to keep offering care for dementia.
Therefore, it is very important for you to learn ways in which you can help the ailing person without compromising your mental health or well-being. How can this be done effectively? Read on to learn some tips and tricks that work wonders:

Caregiving Is A Soulful Expression Of Love
The foremost point before offering care to a patient with dementia is to remember that it an expression of love when you choose to offer care to them. They need constant support, love, and care. The journey of providing care to the patient with dementia is not a short one and thus requires consistency, grit, and unconditional dedication on your part to help the patient feel better.

Learn About Dementia And Stay Grounded
When the journey of giving care to an ailing person starts, you need to equip yourself with the set of knowledge that helps you stay aware of what is going on inside the patient’s mind. Many days will be depressing and some would be reassuring too but the key point is to remember that the more you learn about the disease, its symptoms, and management, the better. Gradually, with information and application, your management will become better and you will be able to help the family member with dementia smoothly.

Always Choose Kindness, No Matter What!
Kindness is one quality that is even felt by plants and animals. When humans with an ailing soul reside with you, they need your attention and utmost kindness. I do understand the fact that it is easier said than done but this is the only way to help your patient productively. So, no matter how frustrating it gets, always choose to speak and respond kindly. They might be weak mentally but the touch of kindness would surely be recognized by them. Therefore, make a sensible choice and try to stay compassionate and kind towards them all the time.

Make Healthy Lifestyle Amendments
Taking care of a patient with dementia takes a toll on your mental and physical health too. You put your mental health at stake when you avoid working on your well-being. So, in order to stay actively engaged in caregiving, it is important that you make better lifestyle choices like doing exercise every day, eating healthy, and doing breathing exercises to calm your racing mind. Self-care must always be prioritized because of you fail to do so; you would fail to help your family member too. After all, charity begins at home so start with your transformation and gradually take your patient along and help him or her make healthy amendments too. The outcomes will not be disappointing.

Help Your Aging Family Member Take Baby Steps
Consistency is the key to helping someone facing dementia. Every single day counts and thus you must help your family member take baby steps towards self-management. So, persevere and wait for better days to come. Meanwhile, help your family member keep doing what is best for them. Gradually, things will get better.

Join A Support Group
Indeed, your mental well-being is vulnerable when you offer care to the patient combating dementia. This means that you need to do everything possible to establish good mental health. So, when things start stressing you out unnecessarily, do whatever you deem fit to retain your health. Many people have made support groups in both the physical and virtual worlds. So, if going out is a problem for you, join an online support group and feel validated and empowered to keep helping your family member.

The Bottomline
To sum up, dementia is a life-long ailment that cannot be cured but only managed. The informal caretaker at home has to be very strong, consistent, and devoted to offering this service. So, when things get tough, adopt the ways I have shared above to help your family member in the best possible manner.
