Rebuilding Trust During Recovery

1/25/2016

Once you've gone through the necessary therapies and resolved not to abuse drugs, you may realize how much damage you've caused to your family or friends. You will need to rebuild trust with your family and convince them about your new resolutions. As the old quote goes—action will speak louder than words. There are no better words you can use at this point to convince a random friend about your newfound life. But It's entirely possible to restore a damaged relationship and continue with new guiding principles. Meanwhile, if you realize you can't undo some past issues, don't beat yourself over it.
Focus on yourself
People will always trust individuals who are focused and goal-oriented. But It's a common mistake for drug patients to be wrapped up in their past wrongdoings and judgmental mindset until they lose focus. If you focus so much on previous thoughts, then no doubt you'll be caught up in depression and finally snap back to drugs. You can not win trust with a disoriented mind. Try to demonstrate your focus by practicing meditation, balanced eating, and journaling. There are tons of self-awareness practices that can prove helpful for a focused mindset.

Take accountability
To gain trust from friends and relatives, you'll need to demonstrate accountability. Most would ask, accountability in what sense? Accountability is simple as knowing what to do when attacked with depression, anxiety, and relapses. Without responsibility, there is a chance of relapsing and putting the blame on the crappy  environment or lousy family members. A great move is to know what kind of kinds of stuff can compel you to try drugs. For example, the smell of methylated spirit can quickly trigger a compelling appetite to grab a bottle of alcohol. Whichever item sinks your boat, try to maintain awareness. That way, you can win trust.

Perfection mentality
No one trusts a person with overconfidence. There's nothing wrong with aiming for the best, but you should withdraw your mind from immediate results if you are recovering from drugs. Others leave the rehab center with sheepish overconfidence and claim they feel comfortable in a bar or watching alcohol adverts. Once you've eliminated overconfidence off your cart, you could win great trust from family.

A circle of positive friends
As the old saw goes, "tell me your friends, and I tell who you are." Everyone trusts a person with a good circle of friends. To rebuild trust with your family members, it's better you start hanging out with new positive friends. Having a new friend could be as simple as having one friend who watches over you during risky new year celebrations or parties. The goal is to demonstrate your resolutions for sobriety.

Weekly routine
Weekly routine can involve tasks such as attending an online meeting or taking a nature walk. As for the first example, there are many online sessions geared towards helping persons with substance use disorder. Having a weekly routine related to drug recovery is a sure way to regain trust from families and friends.
